Heat press transfers are a quick and precise way to embellish T-shirts. Whereas silkscreening requires individual layers for each color, heat transfers accurately apply many colors in just seconds. You can even customize designs with your home computer, and then apply photos with heat transfers. Though heat press equipment can be expensive to buy, you may be able to rent a heat press for small projects, depending on your area.
Instructions
• Acquire your transfer. Ready-made transfers can be purchased online; ProWorldInc.com and ArtBrands.com sell stock transfers and manufacture custom transfers. You can also purchase blank transfer paper and print your own designs using an inkjet printer.
• 2
Test the pressure of the heat press before turning it on. Adjust the pressure if needed.
• 3
Turn the press on while open and set the temperature according to its instructions.
• 4
Place a T-shirt on the bottom plate of the press, then briefly clamp the press down to remove residual moisture and flatten the fabric.
• 5
Position your transfer on the T-shirt according to the instructions. Some types of transfers should be placed on the shirt image-side-down, while some must be image-side-up; always be sure to check the instructions for your specific transfer.
• 6
Press the shirt for the specified amount of time for the type of transfer, then open the heat press.
• 7
Carefully peel the transfer backing off immediately if you are using a hot-peel transfer. Cold-peel transfers must be allowed to cool before the backing is removed.
• 8
Wait 24 hours before washing your newly-decorated shirt.
