Creating and printing custom t-shirts is fun, easy, and affordable. With transfer paper, custom designs are printed and ironed onto blank t-shirts. Transfer paper can also be used to print designs onto any fabric based item including bags, pillowcases, sweatshirts and more.
Things You Need to Create Iron-On Transfers
Local office supply and craft stores often carry kits for t-shirt making that include everything you will need such as software and a blank t-shirt. You can also gather your own materials.
• Design/Photo
• Software (Photo/Graphic such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Paint, Word, etc.)
• Iron (or heat transfer press if you have one)
• T-shirt (or other fabric based item receiving transfer)
• Transfer Paper
• Printer
Make sure that you have enough ink for your printer. Large, detailed graphics will require and eat up a lot of ink. Once your t-shirt graphic has been designed, it’s time to get it printed.
Transfer Paper Tips
Choose the right kind of paper that is compatible with your printer and t-shirt type. Transfer paper can be bought for inkjet and laser printers and for white and dark t-shirts. The print quality is significantly better when the correct paper is used.
Print on the correct side of the paper. Transfer paper will often have some kind of marking on the non-printing side. Run a test through the printer by using a plain piece of paper and marking one side of it to see what side comes out.
Print a Test
Make sure you print a preview or test of your graphic before actually printing on the transfer paper. Transfer paper packets only come with so many sheets and this will allow you to make any adjustments without wasting transfer paper.
Flip (Mirror) Image
It’s important that flip your graphic and or text in order for it to appear correctly on the t-shirt. Depending on the software that you use, a flip (mirror) option may be available. Many graphic applications have a “transform” setting in which you can flip images.
If the graphic software doesn’t have a transform setting, you can also flip the image from the “print” settings of almost any application. These are standard instructions that work for most printers.
• Click “File” then “Print” from the document you want to reverse the text.
• Under Printer Name, select the printer you would like to use and click “Properties.”
• Click on the “Advanced” tab, locate the “Mirror Image” or “T-Shirt Transfer” option and select “On” to enable the “Mirror” option.
• Click “OK” to save your settings.
• Click “Print.”
The “Mirror Image” option is often found under Orientation or Advanced in the Printer Properties panel depending on your printer make and model.
Iron Transfer to Shirt
Transfer paper requires that a lot of heat and pressure from the iron be used in order to completely and evenly transfer the image. Also, make sure that you are ironing on a hard and durable surface.
Read the transfer paper guidelines on when to remove the transfer from the t-shirt. Some will require you to remove the paper while it’s still hot. Carefully peel one corner back to ensure the graphic has adhered to the shirt. Let your shirt cool and it’s ready to wear.
Be careful when washing shirts that have been made using transfer paper. It’s best to wash by hand or use a gentle setting. Turn shirts inside out if mixing with other clothing during a wash. Transfers may peel and crack over time.
